Blue Carbon – climate adaptation, CO2 uptake and sequestration of carbon in Nordic blue forests

Marine plants and algae take up inorganic carbon from the atmosphere and ocean through photosynthesis, and convert this carbon to biomass, thereby contributing to an oceanic carbon uptake from the atmosphere. The Global Carbon Project estimates that around 23% of the anthropogenic emissions over the last decade have been absorbed by the ocean, and even small changes in this oceanic carbon uptake will have large consequences for the amount of CO2 remaining in the atmosphere and therefore on the global effects of climate change on nature and societies.
